Aquariums - Helpful in reducing Stress

Stress is a fact of life for many people in today’s world. It can cause numerous health problems, such as a heart attack, high blood pressure and mental disorders to name a few. We cannot always eliminate all the factors that cause us stress in our lives, but we certainly can find ways to alleviate stress. Finding various relaxation techniques is one of them. Staring at my aquarium is what helps me to relax.

Several studies, including one published in the Summer 1990 issue of Anthrozoos, a publication which focuses on the relationships between humans and animals, do suggest that the physical activity of sitting and viewing an aquarium, does indeed, lower blood pressure.

What makes an attractive Aquarium ?

It is the combination of lighting, plants, decorations and fish. For example, bright fluorescent lights will show off the fish colors and promote plant growth. There are many flowering plants available and they can make an aquarium a beautiful underwater garden. Bushy plants provide hiding places for the fish while spindly plants gracefully sway with the current of the water.

Decorations, such as rocks or driftwood encourage the fish to hide and play. They also dress up the tank and give it a natural feel.

The biggest factor is the type of fish. Are they going to be big fish, small fish, schooling fish, top swimmers, medium level swimmers or bottom swimmers? All species of fish have habits. Neon tetras are small and look best when they in a school. Gouramis like to swim at the top because they periodically stick their mouths out of the water to take a gasp of air. African cichlids are medium swimmers and go anywhere in the tank. Size of fish is important. A tank cannot be overcrowded and remember that small fish can grow big.

An active and attractive tank encourages the viewer to watch the tank longer and it brings on a greater feeling of tranquillity.

Just by looking at the gentle movement of the fish and listening to the bubbling of the filter, you will forget everything else that is around you. Soon you will find yourself mesmerized.

This is also the reason why many doctor and dentist offices or counselling centers have aquariums. It’s pure relaxation thanks to nature’s beauty.

The World of Saltwater Fish

The world of saltwater fish is both fascinating and fun. They come in a variety of different colors and sizes, and make for terrific pets. But you’ve probably been told that saltwater aquariums are complicated, need constant attention, and cost a lot. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. With today’s technologies and Saltwater Aquariums For Dummies, a saltwater aquarium can easily be mastered by anyone.

The beauty and intrigue of saltwater fish draws many people into the hobby. But not all individuals are fully aware of what it takes to keep fragile saltwater specimens happy and healthy. Even though today's modern technology makes saltwater fish-keeping easier than ever, the decision to set up a saltwater aquarium should not be taken lightly. The special needs of saltwater fish present considerable challenges. The prospective aquarium owner needs to be well-versed in all the responsibilities required for a saltwater system.

Research, Research, Research

If you are considering setting up a saltwater aquarium in your home, your first step is research. Learn as much as you can about the individual fish and invertebrates that interest you. Not all species offered in the industry are equally well suited for the typical home aquarium. Choose fish and invertebrates suitable for the novice aquarist and refrain from pursuing unsuitable species, or species that have poor success rates in captivity.

Plan Enough Time for Care and Maintenance

A substantial time commitment is required to keep a saltwater aquarium system healthy.

A saltwater aquarium requires diligent maintenance to keep it clean, temperature-controlled, and properly lit. Salinity is also paramount, so replacing evaporated water each day is critical.

Fish and invertebrates need to be fed on a regular basis. Remember that different species have different food requirements. Finally, saltwater aquariums rely on mechanical systems such as filters, pumps, heaters and light fixtures. Like all equipment, these items require regular maintenance to keep them operating efficiently.

Because they need consistent care, saltwater aquariums cannot be left unattended for more than two days. It's a good idea to involve outside family members or friends with your aquarium. That way you can ask them for their help in caring for your aquarium when you are away from home.

Saltwater fish keeping is a wonderful, challenging, and educational hobby that can be a rewarding experience for the whole family.

Once your new system is up and running, maintaining your aquarium will become less of a chore, but more of a pleasurable routine and enjoyable escape.
